Hakushu distillery is nestled in a deep forest surrounded by mountains at a very high elevation (700 meters) the whisky ages more slowly with less wood influence on the dram. The three ingredients that make up the Hakushu 12 year is unpeated malt aged in hogshead barrels, unpeated malt aged in sherry butts and peated malt aged in ex-bourbon casks.Compare this with Scothland's highest distilleries are at an elevation of 355 meters. An extremely rare and highly sought-after addition to the Hakushu range, this 25 year-old was rated 93/100 by Jim Murray, who called it "a malt which is impossible not to be blown away by".
Nose: Smoky on the nose with toffee apples, rancio, Armagnac, old ginger and nutmeg.
Palate: Sherry palated with wood smoke, linseed, rhubarb and custard cream, raspberries, walnut, light note of spearmint.
Finish: Long finish, herbal, nutty finish with bittersweet oak on its ending.
